Fun Fact For Men’s Health!

Enjoy smaller portions of foods containing solid fats, such as regular cheese, sausage, bacon, pizza and grain-based desserts.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Every year at Thanksgiving, we put on our sweatpants so we can stuff ourselves mercilessly with turkey, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday. But inevitably, in that hour between feeling so full you think you’ll explode our relatives end up finding you conked out on the couch.

Along comes little Petie with his scientific explanation that you’re tired because the turkey you just ate is laden with L-tryptophan. Is the turkey really what’s to blame for Thanksgiving sleepiness?

What is L-Tryptophan?

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid. The body can’t make it, so diet must supply tryptophan. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins. Foods rich in tryptophan include, you guessed it, turkey. Tryptophan is also found in other poultry, meat, cheese, yogurt, fish, and eggs.

Something to think about when choosing a spread for your bread

Have you every wondered which spread is better for you, margarine or butter? According to registered dietitian and director of Clinical Dietetics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Jennifer Nelson, margarine may be better for your heart health. While margarine is made from vegetable oils, containing no cholesterol, butter is made from animal fats containing high levels of cholesterol and saturated fats. Margarine is full of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, “good fats”, which help reduce low density lipoprotein (LDL) “bad cholesterol”. When choosing a type of margarine however, the more solid it is, stick margarine for example, the more trans fats it contains. Jennifer Nelson recommends choosing a spread with the lowest amount of calories that suits your taste!
